Sculptor of ebony and ivory.

Sculptor of ebony and ivory.

These sculptors are from the village of Macomia in Cabo Delgado province which borders the southern Tanzania.

The highlands of northern Mozambique were the cradle of Makonde (also known in ancient times by vandondes and mavia). Until today the ethnographic and historical literature has used the term "Makonde" and similar words to denote a culturally and linguistically homogeneous ethnic group that eventually settling in altiplanaltos. The Makonde, more homogeneous than the descendants of ancient populations, would result from mixing of different groups of people who took refuge in these highlands.
