I always get confused with photos like these, is it sad, is it beautiful? Something in both their poses suggests dignity, as much as their clothes show material poverty and a hard life. There's always an immediate reaction to this, which is, "I wonder what hapenned to him to be in this situation?" which always sounds paternalistic and superficial. It's a tendency to judge sucess and achievement based on external appearances that I try to get rid of. Of course that in South Africa, with its recent past of inequality and lack of access to opportunities makes everything murkier...

True.....I find such shots beautiful at times, the only thing that brings me sadness is finding out how they got to be where they at,the misfortunes they might have faced, rejection by their families,etc...!
And the inequalities will take forever to wade off or to be forgotten, not with our current political and economical conditions!

the subject certainly seems to carry much dignity -- when all else is gone and it's all that's left -- it's a beautiful thing

Life can rob one of all his or her valuables, but it will never take away one's pride and dignity...!
