Unsustainable

Unsustainable

Everyone is talking about sustainability and green architecture but how unsustainable is to keep on demolishing perfectly good buildings, some of them that should be considered heritage, to put in their place cheaply and poorly built, badly designed so called "green buildings"?

This is in Roeland Street, the department of Works is busy demolishing half a block for the parliament extension, including a very interesting and well built modernist building.

Another good example is Cape Town Station, it got a "facelift" that destroyed its character, took out the things that worked well and replaced them with inadequate solutions, in my opinion a complete disaster (and they're still busy with it!)

Is it lack of imagination or actually lazyness that stops us from reimagining these buildings and spaces, giving them new uses and making them more efficient? I'm sure we could do better...
