Goodbye, cruel world...

Goodbye, cruel world...

Every now and then I feel like quitting taking photo's.

I look at the work of others and I feel like mine pales in comparison.

I asked someone the other day what they think of my photos and they

said "Mmmm... I like some of it, but you don't really compose, hey?"

I thought that was one of my strong points. I retorted with

"Well you can't really compose with a Diana" and smiled sheepishly.

So I'm in that phase now, where I want to retire,

Where I'm struggling to find inspiration, and

developing photos just seems to be getting more and more expensive!

But I'm hanging on, waiting for that flicker of inspiration to hit.

Flicker...mmm.... :)

hahahah! you are hilarious!! plus i love this pic. don't stress, just remember, no one has the eye you do, so what you take will always be inspiring for others. keep snapping!

i feel you on the developing part. i recently lost two 36 exposure black and white spools thanks to the photo store i sent them to for developing. they 'accidentally' washed the negs in the wrong tank so they came out blank with some yielding faint images. besides my cash going down the drain, i was more gutted by the fact that i was really looking forward to the results of this work containing images reflecting a significant point in my life. i'm battling to get over it a week later. this rant is not directly related to your feelings, but i had to shed a tear :(

    oh Buchu! the dramz!

Firstly, you have a wonderful ability to capture and pick up (with your eye) those quirky moments in every day life that others would look past. You have strong ideas. it seems as though every picture has a narrative/multiple narratives. I like your pictures alot for this reason.

Also - what other people say about your work/you/etc is often (always) about them and not about you. You cannot stop doing something just because it doesn't fit/appeal to someone else's taste at that particular time. You are taking photo's for yourself.
Composition is something we all have to work on. Alot of factors come into play...light/line/movement/the moment....
Keep working on your composition. break the rules. your pictures are great. and i really mean that.

    just a thought.

I'm with the graduate on this one: You're funny!
How can you come up with such thoughts after you upload a photo like the one above?

Also: The most fun I ever had with a camera (my first digital) was with a Smart camera, smaller than a matchbox , it had no screen, and the viewfinder was more decorative than functional. Needless to say I made most of my photos without much composition, it was about snapping the moment and because I could hide it inside my palm and just leave the lenses peeking between my fingers, most people never noticed what I was doing, I could also walk around without bags or camera pouches that attract too much attention at the wrong times and places. I loved the freedom it gave me, no worries, no difficult decisions on settings, aperture, white balance, speed, etc... just see something and click it from the whatever angle possible...

Whatever and however you do it just have pleasure with it, don't take it too seriously and especially, do what you feel right, there's no rules here, you expression is yours alone, if the great masters ever payed any attention to what their critics said, photography wouldn't be what it is now (read about how Bresson popularized the 35mm format against all the "conoisseur" opinions against it)

    Dangle on!

    Dear friends,
    thanks for the kind words.
It seems like life as Buchu
is worth hanging onto after all...

    @Caz, you're right
@NguJaz, yeah im dangling my feet off a ledge.
Its supposed to look like I'm jumping into the sea.
@UP, will look up the Bresson story
@ Shy1 - Running shoes ARE shoes, verstaan?

  9. Greer

    gasp!

running shoes should never (ever) be worn AS shoes.

    quits.

    smiles :)
