A freak heal storm hit the Nkaneng Settlement of Marikana, Rustenburg during the mineworkers' strike. Everyone was looking for cover to protect themselves from the abnormally large hail stones that fell on Thursday, 7 September 2012.
Journalists' cars refused to move on the muddy dirt roads, as those on foot at the time of the storm found themselves knee-deep in grey sludge, wading through fields of litter in pursuit of a way out.
I took this image shortly after the storm, that left usually dry and arid landscape covered in white. I thought the landscape looked so beautiful. For a moment, the horror and tragedy that IS Marikana was tranformed into a thing of beauty, offering if only for just a moment, hope to the plight of the striking miners.
