WE WILL NOT BE MOVED//a meditation

the story of Hangberg, Hout Bay.

I atttended a solidarity march in hangberg with some fellow 'graphers on sunday afternoon.  The march was held to protest Helen Zille's orders for police to shoot at community members who had been protesting pending evictions. History is repeating itself there & poor people have no voice. Hangberg  is situated just above the main tourist attraction of the town, and it also has incredible views over the bay. It seems like its unacceptable for the DA for rich people in houtbay to have to look out onto shacks.

This is the first of a series of uploads that will explore the Hangberg story.

As much as I support people's struggle for housing and better living conditions,as much as I do not support police brutality at all, as much as I was on their side when they tried to auction the hill some months ago... in this case I have my questions about the credibility of their claims so I can't give my full support to their cause. I know someone who has participated on a disaster management course focusing on fire prevention about 3 years ago on Hangberg. I stand to be corrected but according to what I've been told those houses were built on a fire protection area after they were warned not to do so and after the course demonstrated how difficult it would be to prevent a fire from spreading to the rest of the community. So the eviction was for their own safety, to prevent fires in the community, not to protect the rich people of Hout Bay as you say. Also, according to what I've been told most of those houses had no one living there which makes me think that someone is trying to get free housing out of this...

I know they've been talking about the fire break as a potential risk but i've been told by some community members that the fire break is raised every time a new development springs up on the other (wealthy) side of the hill. Valid point about the housing...

(I don't believe the government should build houses for people but that's a whole other debate)

I think for me, the violent manner in which the police treated the community is unacceptable. A few people got their eyes shot out!
