Site (may be) Interrupted.

an article.

Okay, so I hedged my bets, but what it is, is what is it.  There is a chance this site will go down for the month of February.  I know that sounds dire, but, it all has to do with 'money-matters'.

I have run out of funds to finance the server that runs this site (with other sites involved, but 75 consumes 98% of all resources).

So, I was anticipating a 'client' to pay me before this month (January) came to an end, so everything can flow, but it appears that won't happen.  I have been working on other forms of cash injection, but like a quote I read:

Who ever said progress was a slow process, was right, but they didn't tell us it was going to take this long.

I suspect the company providing the 'server technology' will want their money and because there won't be any, they will 'suspend' the service.  I will try to speak to them tomorrow, see if they can grant me 'clemency'.

Alas, it's a pity, this month is good, photography fantastic, dialogue even more interesting.  The stats for January are fantastic: half a million hits, 54 thousand page impressions, [ahem!] but wait I was going to do that in April.

Now, all I have to do, is to find a way to raise about 3 grand (yep, that's how much it costs to run 75 every month) by Thursday morning, wish me luck.

Donations are welcome, ;-)  Okay, in being honest, I could use some ideas on how to keep 75 running, if you got anything, let me know.

So, in the event that 75 should go down and you want to know when it's going to come back bookmark this link: http://twitter.com/75

  2. lebogang nkoane

3 thousand Rands per month --- give or take bandwidth consumption --- that's the part that costing a quite a bit.

Make a suggestion and we can see how we can back you up. I am willing to contribute something. How much time can you buy to allow us to come up with a plan?

  4. lebogang nkoane

When I wake up this morning --- I'll make contact with the 'service provider' ---- see if I can get us some time.

helang. i didnt know you paid for this? and alone? thats something else man. firstly, thank you, but seeing as how things may not come together financially, i think it's only fair that we all pitch in somehow. let us know how please.

true true, let there be a plan i too will contribute...and yah i agree with you Makhaya: "i think it's only fair that we all pitch in somehow."

    Err..

    R 3000 x 12 = R 36 000 annual hosting cost

    R 36 000 / 45 (graphers) = R 800

    R 800 / 12 = R67 monthly

    hmmm?

    jus maybe!

*calculations stand to be corrected i not use calculator.

    :-)

Okay --- I am working on some --- rescue package (sounds like the US Federal Bank) --- I'm going to try and secure financing for this February --- then after which I will come up with a 'strategy' to get 75 to be 'self-sustain' itself.

I will communicate sometime later in the afternoon ---

    *fingers crossed.

    blogsta

...yeah i think the photographers should pay the monthly fee... :)

    blogsta

i also like the fundraising idea... :)

Agreed with everybody, i think the subscription idea is dope with a twist, maybe there should be Pro 'graphers who subscribe annually.

yes, i now agree it is "a collective effort" to upkeep and maintain 75.
my only query is this; 75, as an online photo-blog(do excuse my insensitivity) is appealing and exciting on basic levels to which all 'graphers involved relate: photography, photographic perceptions, and visual stories to which we learn and gather from.
(might i add the need, and use of icons, aliases, alter egos, to be precise, a.k.a!)

now, although it may be moving for all to gather at this very hour of need and take up collection, i will just point out, rather question the purpose of public meetings, is it really necessary to know who is behind the stories on 75, do we really need to size each other up? it is known that when people gather and meet each other, opinions are made, and i just ask, does the perception of one individual over another need to change merely on the physicality or even gender specifics, which have been at the peak of some peoples' inquisitiveness lately.

why not find creative means of servicing 75, other than queuing for di-plate at a session that will take for ever to get sorted out, in-case sponsorships roll-outs don't come through!

  16. NguJaz

seiletsatsi: "get together one weekend a month n have like a braai or sumn n each person buys a plate", like a societi (lol)?

changingtibet: "creative means of servicing 75"? pray tell -- lol
    *ducks

ngujaz, seriously, we should consider long term measures to undertake which can sustain and maintain 75,well beyond circumstances like this one which will no doubt incur in the future.

yes, we can sign up and pay a monthly fee. done! but i'm just thinking as the site grows, and with lebogang cooking in his urbane designer pad, something is bound to get interrupted.
@ lebogang, am merely illustrating a point.

so my point is this, maybe as with the health brief that came out, we can have commissioned photography sessions, from which a certain percentage can maintain the site expenses for a period of time. maybe even hold exhibition sessions, we really don't have to meet for these sessions. they could be online, photos could be sold, books can be made-sold, campaigns conceived, babies made as the revolution hopefully gets televised!
therein jaz, is the creative means of 'servicing 75'.
