Hello,

First things first --- our first book went live: Heritage Day.

Now, to matters of the heart --- I know I have spoken of exhibitions here and then, but after meeting with MASS>APPEAL (site will go live tomorrow, I am told), a change is in order, we are in a new world, new ways of communication, of engaging, of sharing, of discussing.

The principles and values of how to exhibit in this new medium implies we have to experiment more, try other ways of doing things, the old days of a white-painted walls with photographs on them and lil' snacks, drinks and people walking around a room do not apply any more, they are, well, old school.

In this age, we gotta think, differently, approach things differently --- for example:

by the mere fact of 75 being what it is --- it is in a way a dialy exhibition of photography.

So, with that in mind --- I am open any and every other idea on how we can run exhibition (or any other ways of engaging) that resembles the state of the art that we are in.  If you got ideas of how we can throw down an exhibition with this phrase in context:

Make do with what we got (borrowed from Beckoning Lovely)

Here are some of the ideas I have:

  1. a projector (portable or not);
  2. a collection of photographs;
  3. a laptop (or some device that can store and display photography)
  4. a wall (or anything that can display objects projected on it)

and that's all there is to exhibition --- now anybody can throw down a 75th exhibition whenever, whenever -- and anybody can choose which theme, style, set of photography (with permission from the owner of the photograph) to exhibit.

I am madly, deeply, excited by this idea ---

Your thougths?

1ove, shared collaboration.

    Starting with first things: are the book submissions closed when the book goes live?

    As for the exhibition, we should try to take this to disavantaged communities, schools, etc., we did something similar in Mozambique for the first photography festival, PHOTOFESTA, we projected photos in several informal settlements, cultural associations, bars and outdoor spaces in and around Maputo. Even when there wasn't electricity available near by, the will of the spectactors was so strong that they would always come up with a solution (sometimes giving new meanings to the concept of "extension chord").
    I also think we shoud avoid galleries or spaces where art is treated mainly as an economic commodity from their 70% commission, there's a lot of public spaces that might be available to exhibit as long as we follow the right channels.
    Sometimes a wall is not enough, depending on texture, color, smoothness, etc. we should also try to get a projection screen, when and if possible.
    Your excitement is contagious.
    I'll try to drop some more thoughts as the idea matures.

    Awesome!

    on book closure -- i've sent you an email --- but yes, book submissions close when a book goes public.

    I am going to speak with people (read: aunt) about a school in alexandra and see what we make of it.
