Things to do

an article.

Hello,

I have a few ideas on things I need to work on to change or rather improve around these parts. I'd like to share them with you so, you can advise on things to add,  remove or modify.

Firstly, I think the books don't work — so I am going to remove them and introduce 'narratives' (ala photo-essays):

this means when a 'grapher has reached any multiple of 75 photographs, that grapher on any day can chose to post more than 1 photograph, limited to 5 or 7 photographs to go with that day.

Secondly, there are a few themes coming up, but I'd also like to make the themes rather more official and prominent:

by official, I mean the system (backend) should be aware of these themes and when a 'grapher posts a photograph on the day a theme is running they can choose to include it onto a theme or not, then archive the themes on the front page.

Thirdly, I want to add the ability to track conversation via email:

this means that you can opt-in to be notified by email when somebody replies to (or after) your comment on a photograph. I will aslo extend this to the 'refresh' thing to show you replies to your photographs (btw: this have been available, albeit hidden deep in your profile)

Fourthly, I want to start integrating other social networks, you can choose to opt-in or out of it:

if you have twitter or a facebook profile, you will be able to associate your account with either or both (and use either to login).  So, when a 'grapher posts a photograph, they can choose to have that be auto-shared on their facebook wall or twitter timeline, it's all upto you.

Fifthly (I am pushing these -ly stuff huh?) I want to create a quick and easier way to share stuff we find on the interwebs:

… being that we are already spread wide by buzz, twitter, facebook, flickr, google-reader, I want to pull those onto the site too; so a 'grapher 'biography' page will be more of bio-stream, so your activity everywhere else can be pulled onto your biostream, if you got a blog, we will pull the rss/atom feed to be displayed.

Sixthly, I will fix some minor bugs, including:

displaying the correct camera-data, this will take a bit, as I'll have find which of the exif data on the camera is common and similar.  I also want to add more (include details what software was used to post-produce the photograph).

Seventhly, I want to add live stats. In my mind I call this: FLY, don't ask me why, it just makes me happy when I think of it that way:

the stats will be real-time, when a photograph is loved, a comment is made or when somebody logs on type thing. The generic stats will be there: number of photographs, comments, love, type of cameras, average day of week and times when most activity occurs.

Eightly, an exhibition. 10th October.

… and that is all from me, what are your thoughts?

Awesome sauce dude. Really great work on the site. I have little reason other than backup/archiving for my Flickr account. 99% of my time is spent on 75 :)

As for the space...If the 10th is your final answer, I can try and organise some space in JHB. I have a contact. Let's chat over email or something to work out the details ?

    :)

    Yes, lets do that.

I don't have anything to add except to say that the proposed changes above would make my very happy. :)

    BOOOM!

    this is me excited, all this sounds so G O O O O O D.

  7. Diaan

Ooh, just thought of something. How about a [please crit this image] checkbox when uploading an image to indicate that the photographer is specifically looking for more in depth critiques of the image?

    Hmmm,,, I'll add it.

I am also thinking of allowin' the 'grapher to chose if the photograph is best viewed on black and the system will automatically convert the 'view to black'.

Nice ideas Lebogang - and again, thanks for creating this space for us to share & learn.

I also love the exhibition idea - only problem is I'll be out of town on that date ... You snooze you lose, right?

    Keep up the good work

    ta!

Well, the exhibition date is likely to change, I have been plotting to try and sync it with the coffee-book I have been talking about for years now. I somehow feel it will be fitting to have an exhibition and introduce the book at the same time, but we will see what the Gods have to offer.

Aside, all these things assuming I will have time, bread+butter tends to occupy my time, but again, we will see what the Gods have to offer.

    This is awesome.
Thank you for a great platform, we learn, inspire and get inspired.

    I've got one suggestion though...
How about we optimizing the site for mobile as well.
So we can comment and view the photos in a site that is mobile friendly.
[A mobile stylesheet or something like.]
