I know is goner be a hard1 or not.

    4. Uno

    6. lebogang nkoane

@Artwell — it's be a second, even — where you been, you good?

@GLUcose D: lets do that too.

    7. Mpumelelo

      I'm in

    8. Daz

      I'm in.

    9. The Graduate

Can't wait!! just developed my second ever black n white spool and still haven't uploaded from my first spool! aaah yeah! :) looking forward!

    10. Uno

Suggestion for anyone who doesn't know this already:
If you're using a recent version of photoshop, either convert your photo to Grayscale (Image - Mode - Grayscale) or to Black & White (Image - Adjustments - Black & White); not only do the files become much smaller (it excludes all color information) but with the second possibility it gives you a whole lot of options to adjust the image and convert the color information. Just remember that if you've started with a color image always do this after you've saved a copy, you never know if you might come back to it and play with it in color.
      Let's do this!

    11. Artwell

      @lebogang
      Im good
been busy tryna master my skill.
You shoud hook up a 75 party, braai, thingy.
Get like minded people in one space and share ideas

    12. lebogang nkoane

      Artwell — yes we should.

  2. 75th Annual (a book on photography)

    1. lebogang nkoane

Oh, another idea, to add to this is: it would also be kewl to add another 365 pages of photography from anybody and everybody within a given 'theme/topic/essay' …

hmmm, maybe make two versions: the online copy is for the essay and offline/print version would be photography from the 'graphers?

      *i'll think more on this.

    2. Daz

      Brilliant.
But I think 365 images might just be a touch too many. That's a lotta pages!

      What about choosing 75 images.
Asking the photographers to write a 75-word precise of the images you select.
And call that The 75th Annual.
      Just a thought ...

    3. Daz

Oh ... and would I buy the print version of this.

      Yep, I would.

    4. lebogang nkoane

      I like that — I really do.

      Okay — that's it: 75 photographs w/ 75 precise words.

      I like that, I really do. :-)

    5. Uno

Great idea(s)! I agree with Daz, 365 photos is a lot, 75 sounds possible (and cheaper).
Looking at the stats we have 146 graphers, how about choosing at least one photo of each (let's say the one with the most love)? I think that's fair and everyone feels represented and a part of this great project. No tears.

    6. lebogang nkoane

Hmmm,,, I don't know 'bout 146 — I think some level of, dare I say it: appreciation has to come into effect.

I like the 75 thing coz it has a binding on my/our part to appreciate the photography — as an old man once said to me: why would somebody buy it? So, in a way, although I like social participation, one has to make that call and say: these are the 75 photographs for 2010.

Tears or no tears — a call gotta be made.

I suppose, I think Daz's idea just blew my mind — it has a perfect balance and sound to it; 75th Annual, no?

    7. Khumbelo

      BOOM!

it's about time this be done y'all...
i totally agree with y'all, 75 is a good number.

i would love to be part of making this happen...

      *bow

    8. sweetoof

      K i'm in!

    9. MothMan

      another chapter in the movement!

      love it.

    10. ntsasa

i love it. i love it
and we're all grown up adn realise that this is a photography appreciation, and sometimes the appreciation involves only oneself.
Perhaps for representation of teh graphers, have a reference page at the back that lists all teh graphers that were part of the site in that particular year? not necessary though.
And the book will alwasy refer people back to the site to learn / see more.

I think we can easily find forums where we can get lots of free publicity for this, college websites, social networking, friends of friends, etc.

    11. Daz

Great stuff. I love that you love:

      >- 75 photographs w/ 75 precise words

Having a DPS at the back with a collage of all the 'Graphers will be cool too. A snapshot of the community.

Bottom line. I don't really give a toss whether my pics make the 75 cut or not. Its not about me. Its not about my images. Its about 75.co.za. The community.

I'm a part of it. And the selected 75 images will be a part of me ... because they have been already. And I've probably missed a few of the killer shots too.

Look forward to the process. This is gonna be *fun* ..

    12. Matt

      So very keen...

Let me know where I can help out....

    13. lebza

Cant wait to see it,lets go!

    14. yizzi25

you know i only noticed this now. (for real, im so delayed)
i like the idea of 75 photographs , but i also like the idea of 365 photographs.
but for a starting point, 75 photographs sounds the better option --- Maybe after 2 or 3 editions we can go big. in a sense, 365 photographs.

75th Annual (a book on photography)
      Let's do it!

    15. Native Soul

been a while, in finl exams, so just came across a hot topic,
me likes the energy around this mobilization, PRINTED is a sure yes
and maybe u should consider funding opportunities, like this one
SAPPI- ideas that matter its their ten anniversary and they have just opened up the opportuniy to take more that just ngo type projects to a wider range in the creative industry --

i think thi sis a sure way to go for 75th, good paper, and some cash to produce the book.

    1. George Gladwin Matsheke

Well there will be a Celebrate Life picnic during the day on Saturday [dont know where though] ... welll [we can only suggest] that we have the 75 meet up right after that ... night time, no?

    2. lebogang nkoane

… eish planning for a decadent behaviour is a hard for me to do.

but, ja — lets see if/when the 'graphers can meet — then we will work from there, me thinks.

    3. George Gladwin Matsheke

Awesome ... lets do and see ...

    4. yizzi25

yes yes y'all. saturday would be dope for me,
just checked out that venue, i think i know where it is.
so, yeah, let's do it .

    5. lebogang nkoane

      Aiit — lets do this!

      Although lets see what times works out for ai'body: afternoon/evening;

Hey there is a Sunday too. :-)

    6. ntsasa

Evening's always best cos then the errands are out of teh way.
I'm easy for Fri, Sat as long as its evening. Sunday after 8pm.

    7. The Graduate

eish guys. I'm down for a round and Dias would've been interesting, but have something on for Saturday eve already. sigh. Maybe I can meet up with you guys afterwards? although thinking this thing will run till late. either way I'll see what comes up in conversation here and make a plan.

    8. Uno

I'm keen to do it on Friday around 7:00, I'll be on this side of the world and can walk to Dias from my office, Sunday is tricky because...it's just before Monday?
Saturday sounds a little unpredictable, there's a lot of stuff happening and we'll end up loosing some graphers to other "decadent behaviour" events...

    9. lebogang nkoane

      LOL!

Word — I say lets rock both — see what's what, Friday and Saturday.

So, Friday 7PM at Dias — and we will do another post-celebrate-life-picnic session somewhere somehow outthere on Saturday.

      :)

    10. Greer

      friday 7 pm at dias.
wait! how will we recognize each other?
at least we all know what lebogang looks like ;)

    11. lebogang nkoane

      LOL!

      I'll be wearing a red dress,,, :-)

*give me a call and I'll be the guy fumbling around trying make out faces I've never seen.

      :)

    12. Uno

Maybe I should book a table? How many are we?Let's just see:

      - The Graduate
      - ntsasa

      - George Gladwin Matsheke
      - Buchu (?)
      - Suave (?)

Please add your name to the list if you were not includded, but looking at this, I think it should be a table for 15 (maybe more if everyone brings a partner)?

    13. ntsasa

      7pm at Dias. sounds good
      Sorry where is Dias?
I'll be the one who arrives fashionably late so she doesn't have to wait alone for people she hasn't met.
NB: Will someone be phoning Dias to book a table/space for 75? that way i can arrive and say "I'm here with 75" and they'll say "This way please"

    14. ntsasa

      Great thinking UP.
Another 'grapher - Riela will be joining us, so add her.
      Maybe rudzani too
*don't tell him i told you he's in Cape Town

    1. Uno

Phew! And I thought you've been drinking into oblivion these past few weeks... I will think about all the points raised, already have some questions/ideas/opinions, but would like to organize them a bit better.

    2. cazpix

      I hear the following:
the Centre for the Book is a good place to start - for publishing a book. Otherwise, Struik/Random House is the biggest publisher of books using photographers...
I also hear it's very hard to get a publisher to have faith in photographers as a sale-able thing - unless Nat Geo types :P

I LOVE the calendar idea - it should also however maybe be on this basis: people can buy a calendar, they just need to click on which images they want? That way other people can also make their own calendars, and there is a small amount of online sales?

Exhibition - try ask artspace44 in Stellenbosch? Stephen Rautenbach and his photographer friend Bani own it...just opened, check facebook for details?

      Superb ideas :) Yayness

    3. lebogang nkoane

@cazpix ta for the info – I'll most definitely make contact.

On the Book thing, is it not possible to 'create' a book, without needin' to publish it --- like make as many copies as anybody is interested in owning a copy of the book?

    4. Uno

      Ideas for themes:

      - Identity
      - Self portrait
      - Machine(ry)
      - Soccer World Cup (June theme)

      Ideas for the exhibition:

Why not use the same 75 platform on the web, where people can browse each grapher's work, it could just be a projector, a screen and a mouse, if in a gallery, visitors could feel free to browse or sit down and watch the other person's browsing, creating an interactive environment (both watcher/work and watcher/watcher). We could even make it in a way that people could leave comments (keyboard) the same way we do.

    5. lebogang nkoane

Hmmm, not sure 'bout soccer world cup — but hey,,,,

I like the 'interactive' exhibition idea.

      When do we start?

    6. Uno

Why not sure about the soccer world cup? As much as many aspects of it irritate me, no one can deny that it's an historic moment for South Africa as well as an amazing opportunity to register some great moments, independent of the grapher's own motivations and views.
About the interactive exhibition idea I was also thinking about digital frames with slide shows, it saves a lot of gallery space and their popularity is emerging, we could even look for a sponsorship from one of the electronics brands that make them. The frames could be sold with a 75 permanent photo collection (based on theme, grapher, etc.) that could cover gallery costs.

    7. lebogang nkoane

hmmm, i like — lets do this!

*soccer — i'm not into 'riding' waves — but hey, i'd rather photograph kids playing soccer around my hood, than the actual world cup.

    8. Uno

I don't think that everyone would take the World Cup theme literally, I wouldn't, firstly because I don't even like soccer (shocking!), so my relationship with it is completely different from another grapher who does. Secondly because there are bigger social, regional, political, cultural, economical contexts to explore which can shine different lights on it.
I think that with the diversity we encounter here on 75, photography could become the perfect platform to open up the debate around events like this.
So if you want to photograph kids around your hood I think it's great, they will be living that moment and aspects of it will be reflected back to your lenses for sure, that final click will frame it in whatever way you choose...

    9. lebogang nkoane

Aiit — I hear you, lets rock!

    10. cazpix

      the other option for books:
      http://www.24hourphotobooks.co.za/index.htm

Print as many and however you want. I only use Linux, so can't but am sure you could? :)

    11. Hush

      Hi

I signed up , how do I get an invitation to upload images

    12. lebogang nkoane

… somebody has to invite you — but i hear Tebogo is offering invitations: http://75.co.za/tebogo_motea/2010/02/08

      :-)

    13. Android Veliskas

      I totally agrre Lebo..
but you have to realise that as the "founder", "mentor", "facilitator", "administrator" of this site , you are inevitably expected to fuel projects that will unite this community.

im starting my calender today (so thanx for that idea)..

    14. lebogang nkoane

Android, I hear you — eish, mara nna ke ya tswafa — plus, being un-employed means I can't really pursue everything I want to do.

but, we shall see in front.

    15. shizeeda

@ Lebogang: since we're both unemployed and you like my hood ;-) i'll help you with whatever you need. also i know people in publishing around - they hardly do well at marketing so that would be everyone's job... i'll motivate your tswaffing self lol

would it be an actual physical book or online?

i like the calendar. dont really understand the distribution process but i'll catch on later...

also for exhibition im on advisory committee for a museum/gallery thing so if you want i could maybe help out with that - it would really have to be other 75 people and not me since im involved in the selection process eish and they need exhibitions, mostly for next year, so that could be useful. we can plan for next year so if anyone needs lemme know.

    16. lebogang nkoane

      Yay — Awesome!

So, we can speak 'bout this when we meet on Saturday.

      Oh, the book is physical.

      (dance)
