saudade

saudade

a very quintessential Brazilian-Portuguese word for which there is no translation in English. Very simply put, it is the feeling of "missing" something. Only, it's not a verb as in the English "I miss you". It is the painful feeling of missing something or somebody terribly significant that is now over or gone. The rub of "Saudade" is not knowing when or if the object of the "Saudade" will return.
