progeny
I had to look up that word: progeny; The example (mad/dictionary) gives is strangely exactly what this photograph is about.
"a descendant or the descendants of a person, animal, or plant; offspring : the progeny of mixed marriages."
Weird that, even though the word does not refer to it, but that was the example they gave.
lovely
beautiful :)
Photographs of children, are always beautiful to look.
beautiful!
this is a great photograph.
juxtapose, may i ask why you used the caption "progeny"?
if i may.
the word progeny (in my humble opinion) cannot be used for humans. and sadly, the world's distaste for racial mixing has been fueled by such words. when animals of different species/breeds (eg, donkey, horse = mule...more on this later), have an offspring, this cannot be compared to humans, who are in fact (well, at least to me), one species. that is how that horrid word, mulatto, came about. the offspring of black and white were not considered quite human and were thus treated as such in some examples, or with fake dignity for having white blood, or with disdain for having black blood, or with all that mixed together to produce what was famously referred to as the "tragic mulatto". race, being man-made and most often used for oppression can easily be used to define people as being so different that their offspring are required to be given a third classification with excludes them from what is accepted in society = mule = mulatto = the third (wheel) race = why are there only two accepted races anyway?
good question: why are there only two accepted races anyway?
I don't know — but I fear, to answer this question, would be to put importance on 'race'. That is to say, to define 'black' or 'white' implies, one has to accept the notion (albeit temporary) that there is a difference.
Which, I am refusing to accept, even if it's temporary.
makhaya, lebogang,

in my language, progeny would be "leloko", as in leloko la oketsega.
i haven't come across the word used in a pejorative sense, but i do say this subject to correction. the kids in the pic are those of a relative, hence use of the term "progeny", as in "my" descendants, leleko laka. i do however speak under correction, i may have missed the more pejorative usage of the word
thanks for clearing this up.
was about to comment. but think what I had to say is irrelevant now...or maybe it's not...
Even though we have cleared the matter up, please bear with me
so I can make a brief comment.
@ Makhaya, I agree with you, and I would go further to say that not only is there only one species; but also race as we understand it is a social mental, contstruct. There are no "pure" races. Everyone is mixed somehow. Everyone. And thus we can only conclude that there is only one race.
Which is black! Humanity came from Africa!
@Jux thanks for a beautiful pic
As Mia Couto, a mozambican writer, said: "Each man/woman * is a race".
As much as all the points raised formed a very interesting dialogue, our race views in South Africa, if one digs deep enough, are always biased if not distorted, most of the times. As much as it's necessary to have these discussions, when used in a constructive way, no real sense can be made of any of these, we're still years, if not decades or centuries, of a trully color blind society (if it's possible at all).
@ Buchu: As for the "Humanity came from Africa" statement I feel it's in par with all other racist speeches made in the past. Science is only seen as the truth until proven wrong or inacuratte by the latest finding. As far as I see it tomorrow we can even come to find out we're all descendants from aliens who landed on Earth for a quickie...
*my own addition
i like fun -- i needs to have more fun (with grown folk -- just to clear that up)
@ Buchu. Nod. "Race" is fiction. end.
