i recently, as in the last little while, took a trip down to an area near the gxhara river. that's the river where nongqawuse had her foreboding premonitions. she was most likely the first female politcal prisoner on robben island (circa 1860) and has an interesting story all-round (so many stories in this land). nongqawuse was perhaps an accidental freedom fighter, but a freedom fighter nonetheless. thandiswa has a song, "thonga lam" that touches on the story of nongqawuse, at least by my estimation. this photo was taken mid-thrust, while singing that song
