Thrownness

Thrownness

"If man, as the existentialist conceives him, is indefinable, it is because at first he is nothing. Only afterward will he be something, and he himself will have made what he will be." - Jean-Paul Sartre

A counter argument to: Cogito ergo sum (an argument proposed by René Descartes)

But, I however find Existentialism to be within (my) reason --- It proposes that "Existance precedes essence", whereas older school of thoughts, especially those with the idea of a 'Diety', believe that "Essence precedes existance."

Be human.

indeed. the existentialist theory is similar to cthe onstructivist theory (although there are disparities; their premise is similar). the only problem i have with "corgito ergo sum" theory is the presupposition that "thinking is existing".
i have experience of beings who do not (think, that is). whose very existence has little to do with rational thought (or thought of any other nature in general).
    lovely image

twiggle --- fluke (all my photography is such, ;-)

NguJaz: constructivism --- I've heard you mention that before --- I suppose it's the idea that we 'create our own reality' ja/no?

What I like about Existentialism is: it says that we are first born, or rather thrown into existence --- it is then upto us to decide what to do with in that situation. 'that situation' being 'the entire process of life'.

I think I am going to teach my (one day, one day) children existentialism, before I even touch the 'divine command theory'.

This is like seeing through the dark, when there is no light.

    @twiggle----true

Looking at the pic again and again and again.... is like....

dose cars are made of expensive shiny black steel and that building looks like a stack of gold.

@Lebogang----which hour exactly did you capture this?

looks like early hours of dawn, but with those many cars parked there it looks like 6,7pm.

Bareng Rakuba --- around sunset in Summer (jhb timezone) --- i'd say just before 6.30pm or 6.45pm (can't check the actual photograph right now, dont' have access to it)

i'll confirm that tomorrow morning ---
