Koloi ya Dikgomo (Ox Wagon)

Koloi ya Dikgomo (Ox Wagon)

It is rather extraordinary that the age of the ox wagon, which lasted for perhaps 300 years from say 1670 to 1970, should have come to such an abrupt end.

Many of our old towns,  Pretoria, Bloemfontien, Kimberley, Mafikeng, Windhoek and Bulawayo being handy examples, were given a grid lay out from day one. Wide roads, because the ox-wagon had an enormous turning circle.

The roads that have survived and provide evidence of an earlier historical period and a way of life.
