  1. Matt

    Awesome shot...

I think 75 should offer the ability to buy prints ?

  2. lebogang nkoane

Funny you should say that: http://twitter.com/2LMN/status/24078864391

    :-)

  3. Mpumelelo

    Thanks @Matt.
@Lebogang, are we still going to have an exhibition?

  4. lebogang nkoane

I doubt that — unless somebody is willing to manage the entire process.

I am a man without the comfort of enough-time to work things I want I love — I am chasing client-deadlines: left, right and bottom-centre (viva! v-mash viva!).

I am willing to provide anybody with information they would need to get the exhibition off the ground if anybody is keen to run with it.

  5. Mpumelelo

    LOL @v-mash

  6. Mpumelelo

I wish I could hook it up. I've got a lot on my plate as well :(

  7. Diaan

Wow, I like the misty Jozi vibes.

Selling prints = good idea. Organising an exhibition is one helluva thing, so maybe we should keep it in mind but maybe not act on it too hastily.

  8. Palapala

    Beautiful image

  9. Matt

@mpumelelo it may be a bit cheeky but could I have the original of this pic ? It needs to be printed and placed on my wall...I love it...

Cool Matt. I'll hook you up.
    Thank you.

    pylons!!

    1 Selling prints: A must-be-done.
2 75 Photo Book Annual: A must-be-done. Ahem Lebo ... what's happening on that score.
3 75 Exhibition: A-must-be-done. Agree, not hastily. But why don't we get a 'crowd-sourced' set of rules together, plan a venue, and make it happen.

I'm keen, and I will help plan ... just shout.

  14. Mpumelelo

    Thanks alot guys.

    *cough — oh the pressure!

@Daz — my thoughts are, which apply to everything I tend to do lately: lets set a date — and either fail at getting to it (with tangible reflection results) OR succeed.

So, in my mind — I though it would be fitting for the 19th of April 2011 for the Exhibition. To add more to it: have the 75th Annual Book released on the same day, seems fitting, no?

So, I suppose what is next is to figure what is needed, I'd say the following (anybody is free to jump in and add anything).

    For the exhibition:

    1. A venue (which I think is easier, the City of Cape Town has a vested interest in the 'arts': if my memory serves me right City Hall provides free venue for any exhibition);

    2. Printing 'graphs: one A3 sized print on some photographic paper I used, cost me R155; Aals, framing it cost me R659. I guess this where we would either need a sponsor or go the militant way and say: if you want to exhibit your 'graph YOU (or another 'grapher sponsor a 'grapher they want exhibited?) printing it?

    For the book.

    1. A book design — which I intend to do. Something 'bout setting precedence on the 'style & tone' of the book but future books would be open to anybody else;

    2. A collection of photographs to include in the book: a curator of sort (with a liberal perception of photography — not so keen on that 'official' type curators).

    3. Printing the book — finding out what it would cost per copy and putting together a value proposition to anybody who would buy it. I know there is online tools for this sort of thing: it would be good to have a close to 100% South/African foot-print instead.

Aside, I had another thought on the exhibition, 'crowd-sourced-type': but using the digital medium too — say if Mpumi (and the Thesis Social Jam Sessions' that happen in Soweto) would take a collection of photographs to project on the wall or some form of surface. This would require just a projector.

This could be applied to anything that's possible: conferences; school presentations; business presentations; birthday parties; braais; … anything we get involved in, in a social context that could be blessed with 75th Photography, ;-)

This could start the movement, and by this the crowd is not 'outside' of 75 — but the 'crowd-sourced' is the 75th 'grapher who then takes the 'collective' work to the crow-outsourced (LOL!), I mean, the crowd-outside of 75, and in a way it has a sense of each 'grapher being a 'curator' of sorts …

*phew — that's a lot (and I am extremely too lazy to double check spelling or gramma — apologises, in retrospect)

    Your thoughts?

  16. shizeeda

@ LD i didnt quite understad the end of what you wrote but the problem with projecting images instead of hanging them up is that they tend to go unnoticed. people become a bit bored with waiting for the next image or like browsing images (like me. i dont do the standing and analysing an image thing and talking about the deeper meaning of it... okay i do that but its usually an instantaneous thing...) but other people do that so... do you see the difficulty?

anyway re framing: are you crazy! why didnt you ask me about framers? ive looked around and have managed to find a good framer who is cheap... and in pretoria LOL but i dont mind going there cos its cheaper in all ways imaginable and im that personal touch and discussing what would work best for the image type person, whether its paper or framing, and this old man does that and is CHEAP and good. (next time youre here look at thembas mos def images and the framing).

also the price of framing really depends on the frame... frameless also works sometimes. hanging suspended with sinker like things under the print to stabilise it so it doesnt warp and bend.

wouldnt it be really great to have two openings at the same time???! im never feeling the cape town as a venue idea but thats a personal thing. im trying to get a space for a friend of mine to exhibit in joburg so that will give me an opportunity to reasearch venues. i like the idea of an open air exhibit where the images are printed on 'weather proof' fabric... i worked on something like that some years back and it was interesting. the images could then be rolled up and were easy to transport - and MASSIVE.

there are small south african publishers who might be willing to publish the books but that would cost so funding would be necessary... marketing would be the bitch... maybe...

those would be my thoughts:-) hope theyre coherent

  17. lebogang nkoane

    Ah — understood.

Okay, your PTA connect is definately what we should go for. :-)

*on digital: I did not mean, the project would be the 'defacto' exhibition — but like little runner ups to the main exhibition, type thing, as they say in marketing: exposing the idea of 75 outside of the virtual space.

I am also keen on dual exhibition — but that would require a JHB-CT personal who champion the idea, alas — keep us posted on what you find about space in jozi.

I suppose then mostly, it would be printing+framing costs that we will need to get sorted. I heard a lil birdie tell me that 2LMN is willing to 'donate' the costs of printing (framing they are not sure if they can cover that) and it would depend on how many photographs.

So, how many photographs would make for a good exhibition? or do we need a theme/concept/narrative first?

  18. lebogang nkoane

Oh, another thing — is it possible to print a book without 'publishers' involved? I quite like the idea of not having to 'sell our souls' to anybody else!

  19. Kamogelo Mogashoa

Hot shot babe! :) @ lebo i dig that, a book wld be Awsome!

  20. Matt

@ltdn I've started making queries around space for JHB. I'll keep you posted.

Why don't we use the idea Diaan came up with and create a google-group for people to collaborate ideas with ?

I'm very keen for this to happen as I really love the 75 "crew" and would love to see some of their stuff up on a wall...

I've also spoken to Q-Photo here in JHB and they're keen to help out with printing/framing...I'll sit down with them again sometime soon.
