Advice on Gig/Music event photography

a note.

Hi guys, I managed to get myself a media pass for the city hall sessions at... City Hall... next week.

I've made it a project to add to my portfolio, I want to somehow transition into getting paid to do what I love - take photographs.

I know some of you guys have tons of experience commercially, so can you guys give me any advice? Do's don'ts etc. Also any info on how to deal with the musicians would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Peace

I don't know much, but I'll drop my experience.

    1. don't drink — well, don't passout, I did that once and missed the 'key performance'.
    2. get the clichéd shots they need for publicity, it is boring as fuck though!
    3. do a lot of creative shots that make you happy, that way you'd want to do it again.

Ya i second that, keep a clear level minded head on you.

If the event is sponsored, aways keep their branding in as many frames as u can and avoid opposition branding.

Underexpose, or the sage lights will create blown-out highlights. (Or shoot manually and check the highlights.)

Yep i'm with the guys on all their pointers.

    1. Try and be as invisible as possible. (Wear Black clothes)
    2. Get a low light lens. These are cool: 50mm F1.4(this mofo is a beast)/ 24mm f1.8/ 35mm f1.8
    3. Try avoid using your speedlight unless you are shooting the crowd.
    4. Get you the front of the stage before everyone else coz its a bitch trying to push through the crowd, trying to protect your equipment.
    5. You need to be really patient coz people are annoying. LOL
    6. Depending on your camera; bump up your ISO to 1600.

Thanks guys, great feedback! @Lebo, 1) will be a bit of a challenge!

@mpumelo, i have a 50mm f/1.8 and a 35mm f/2 for now, those will have to do. Was thikning of borrowing a speedlite from a friend since i dont have one.

Will be shooting with a 550d.

Any advice for backstage shots, getting them from musicians? I guess the invisibility cloak works there too. But yeah thats me, out of site, catching the hidden stuff.

  6. Mpumelelo

Yeah I guess the invisibility will work.
I have a video that might just inspire you.

Try to use the available light rather than using a speedlight... This is because sometimes the speedlight kills the ambiance.
