THERMOPYLAE

THERMOPYLAE

* The Australian liner, Thermopylae, carrying 52 passengers, approached Cape Town on the night of September 11th in light drizzle and with a thin wet mist hanging over the sea.  This haze deceived the captain into thinking he was twice the distance from shore, when the Theroppylae struck the Mouille Point reef.  Passengers and crew were rescued without loss and the accident was attributed to an error in judgement on the part of the captain.  The ship was a total wreck. *
