Mamas and Madams

Mamas and Madams

This was taken at Obs open streets. The mamas from Marikana settlement were waiting for the rest of the protesting residents to bring the shack they would erect on Lower main. I saw them sitting on a bench next to the couch these three women were sitting on and thought it looked like quite a poignant picture.

I saw the protestors at Open Streets, but there was so much to see there that I feel whatever point they were trying to make was mostly lost in a riot of colourful activity.

I think it was good. They were at a busy intersection. The point that while we want to party, they need homes... Not much more you can really accomplish.

What I thought was cool, is that they didn't really get opposition from the people attending. There was something with the police, but that ended up alright. Last time people did something like that in Rondebosch they were greeted by Hippos.

Perhaps its a testament to the Obs public.

Yeah, I saw that. People were accepting their right to protest without getting upset. They would probably have fared better with a different type of awareness campaign with that sort of captive audience though. I think they missed a golden opportunity.

Because, you know, and this might come as a surprise to some, but protesting isn't the only way to get a message across.

    Just saying.

The problem is that these residents, can't really leave their homes because the city will just reclaim the land even though it's occupied. (Quite a lot has been written on it in the Daily Maverick already) This was a last minute thing... These people are fighting to keep their shacks and rebuilding them on a daily basis so planning something is a little difficult.

Protest is not the only way, but if you have have such limited resources in terms of funds(no money), people and time what can you do?

That said I agree with you. What methods do you think would be more effective in this case?
