I've been studying that phenomenon.
I think, it is because they allow you capture a moment untouched.
By that I mean, when you about to pull a drag or do whatever with the ciggy; you only focused on that task and that task alone but your mind is elsewhere — so a photographer gets a chance to capture a moment of that person, unknown to them, a moment that happens between moments, a moment only the mind knows, but the conscious can't recall.
But, this is just my theory, it most likely, flawed.
Maybe it's about the destruction... destruction of the cigarette, the paper in ruins, destruction of the person. We love ruins.
