Peace In Our Land

Peace In Our Land

I remember starting school in '94, the first year we had free democratic elections, there was a whole campaign aimed at stopping the political violence. This picture is a badge that belonged to my grandmother. The symbol is what they were using for the 'Peace In Our Land' campaign (I know some of you remember it).

the words to the song that accompanied the campaign went something like;

"South Africa/ We love you/ Ouuuur beautiful land/ Let's show the whole world/ We can bring peace in our land...."

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh snap! I remember those!

    That's a throw-way-way-way-back!

Ha, we — I was in standard 7 (what grade is that?) — had to make a 'peace' thing with all the students; I think some helicopter was going to film it, I heard.

    Now, that's a keeper —

Blast from the past, I remember this symbol of peace.
See Des Tutu with white doves on tv.

I was just reading these words of 'Peace Train' by Cat Stevens last night:

    "Now I've been crying lately,
thinking about the world as it is
Why must we go on hating,
why can't we live in bliss

Cause out on the edge of darkness,
    there rides a peace train
Oh peace train take this country,
    come take me home again"

Its funny the word peace in mainstream media and other public discourse seems to have taken a back seat to 'democracy' and 'empowerment' but these two don't ensure peace...or maybe its just the way they're been practiced?
