religulous

No blashempy intended...Watched Bill Maher's documentary on worldwide religion recently...fantastic, witty, informational, contentious but very very truthful.

For the record I am not an atheist nor am I completely agnostic, i am by and large (and baptised) a christian (who does not attend church) and yes I do believe in a higher metaphysical power, afterlife, the soul etc

The issue I have with religion is exactly that, religion - the system and brainwash of religion and its sects, its hipocitical veneer and historical political power and commercial abuse.

whats NB to me is my faith and adopting a moral compass of a higher being to do good in life, rather than brick and mortar of churches and over the top cathedrals, priests, the bible stories which seem to be very fallable (and copied from other belief systems) etc.

that said, Maher is a more apt conversationalist but quite incendiary. Check it out even if you zone out when your particular religion is being scrutinised...my only punt ever on 75.salute

"there is a God, somewhere!" - Priest (Coming To America).

"morality is only a compass, pointing us in the right direction --- we still have to take that path." - Grisham (CSI [Las Vegas]), that is how I view religion and everything else metaphysical.

A friend told me about the movie but I missed it on the circuit.

As for religion, got none and try to build my own moral compass as I go along, there are basic principles of respect and harmony, common to all religions, that are the root of all relationships, with fellow human beings, with nature (both animate and innanimate) and maybe even spirits, aliens, fairies, unicorns, etc if they exist.

As for god, don't believe there's any until proven wrong (same as aliens, spirits, fairies, unicorns, etc) but respect anyone's beliefs as long as they don't impose them on others.

Now my problems start with the churches, institutions and people that represent certain religions and their involvement with governments, organized crime, terrorism, with their bloody history, both ancient and recent, with their segregation (racial, sexual), with their conservative views that don't adapt with the evolution of our societies, with their dogmas and myths... it's a long list, anyone whos' interested on the subject has heard or read all of it before.

By the way, it's a great photo and a great text. Respect.
