BIOGRAPHY

the definition of a grapher.

Twiggle stix began experimenting in photography as a portrait photographer the day his father gave him an old camera, he carried it around his Cape Town high school taking photos of everyone and everything photographable, and eventually perfecting his signature style.

24-year-old Twiggle stix uses subjects from all corners of this country, mainly those unfamiliar to him, but familiar in their cultural bias. Twiggle stix successfully manages to capture these subjects in an environment that manifests the political, traditional, religious, and popular culture that influences the people of our country. These photographs are intimate, and incredibly passionate. They convey messages of the times we live in and the class structure that the youth and elders choose not to let dictate their lives (like that of the previous regime). Twiggle stix’s shots include subjects from the black-upper-echelon viewing haute-couture design down the runway at the SA Fashion, to subjects from polar opposite backgrounds in rural areas as well as the township in South Africa His perspective is so fresh that these poignant images do not fail in portraying the urbanized culture, glamour and style that influences folks from everywhere.

Creativity in Twiggle stix’s work appears to resonate from his love for art, South Africa and its people. His usage of lighting is extraordinary, taking advantage of the most minimal light sources available and transforming it into beautifully lit and deep photographs. Twiggle stix’s work gives birth to cool, it oozes sexuality as well intimacy, and can easily be described as pieces of beautiful contradictions: classical-meets-contemporary, comedy amalgamated with tragedy, poverty juxtaposed against extreme wealth, and of course love and war.
