Urban Collage # 07 - Tied

“Declaration Of The Tie, december 8 1998:

Now the workers of the world have cast aside their shackles,
the modern workman has bound himself again.
To the ever present tie,
to the snake around his adam's apple,
to the cord of sin we use today to measure decency.
Tiewearers of all nations unite!
Cast off the rope that binds you!
Risk your neck!
Liberate yourself and venture forth into open-collar paradise!

(takes off his tie, waves it around a little and throws it to the floor)”

the metaphorical references to the tie in this speech are brilliant. yet there's irony in a european man addressing africans to throw away their ties!

@Sam Buk: I'm in the process of building a case against ties as part of school uniforms, I want to bring it up on my son's school's parent meeting. I don't think it makes any sense to make children wear ties, I can't understand this south african continuation of a british tradition that is not even that old (19th century). In my opinion, even for grown ups, the tie is the most useless fashion prop ever invented.
As for prince Claus, maybe it has to be an european (and a member of royalty) giving the example, since there's still a big number of africans, most of them political leaders, who look at what europeans wear and just follow it without blinking an eye, some of them from the same generation that fought for independence and liberation from european powers.

eish, good luck on presenting your argument to the school. you're dealing with an institutional belief in what is deemed acceptable dress code at schools.

  5. Greer

good for you for arguing for the abolishment of what is a pointless practice for children. love the composition here.
