The downtimes, the uptimes and the silly metaphors about rain and pouring.

an article.

When it rained, it poured.

Since 14h00 this afternoon, 75 went down, in fact it did not go down, the server that hosts it was not reachable.  Why was it not?

Well, you can thank me, for thinking I know how to 'secure' a server (for the geeky-inside all of us: I was messing around with iptables). Just when I thought I done create a secure server, it all fell apart.

The good news is I did create a very secure server, that nobody could access, and literally exactly that happened, nobody could, including me and you (assuming you came here yesterday).

Then I solicited the help of David Venter (Circular Systems (the good folks that provide the hosting for all my madness)), and like clock-work, he sorted it out.

I owe him, big time!

So, it seems as if everything is okay, but guess what as soon as this server went up, the other server that holds, Gusto/Sinah, is down as I write this (what is that phrase: no rest for the wicked).

So, I'd advice you tread with a sense of humour until my next update, I am not certain that all is well, not yet,,, I smell a rat.

What have I learnt from this:

  1. I need to backup-all of 75 every week
  2. Backup all the photographs, once a day
  3. Create a separate 75 journal, that you can access if and when 75 is not available, so you can still keep abreast as to what the problem might be (i am more likely to go with google-blogspot, details will come when I am sure the server is back in/on line).
  4. Invest in a cappuccino machine (going down stairs to get coffee robs me of precious time when I am trying to solve a problem)

That be all, I am going to dig in, and try solve the other server's problem.  Till my next 'post'.
