met this lady in the deep north, about 100km out of plk. she asked me for 5 bucks so that she could buy booze. it was before lunch. at least she was honest. hehe
If she'd said it was for all her kids, you wouldn't have parted with it now would you?
I think it was for "bohobe" to go with the fresh chicken in hand.
Man you're tall!
Nice image
whats also interesting is the kid on the left's expression...
"what, she is doing it again!"
and the other boy's mismatched shoes...
Toys r Us and Barney came and jacked the imagination but I see plk boys are still pushing wheels with sticks... that's all the toys they ever need. Props on the image.
big up 2 bravery! she looks like she means bizniz, hehehe...
u gotta love her entourage tho, i think without them, her confidence wudnt come thru as much, its ol in their eyes...
i love it...!
The cigarette in her mouth, the extended hand, her looks.she is begging for real! thats our country!
doobee, doobee, doobee, doooba eee. How does the FreshlyGround song go?
@ Bafana: Good spotting there mate!
mismatched shoes, damn!! the rubberless push wheel with stick. That there was some skill boy, having to turn and maneuver the ish.
@ abe- children will play in the street, loving everyone they meet. open hearts will be the rhythm of the day. Neighbours will greet each other, sisters and brothers even enemies will be friends. clearly i got carried away on that one. lol.@ ante- "fresh chicken" ha ha ha ha, thats a good one!
I'd like to know who the dude is in the jacket & hat... in front of her.
Is that the source of her hardship...?
???
Great photo journalism, man. Good stuff.
@mokete: that's not a cigarette in her mouth
ag shame, what happened to the lil one's face/eye. See on the left.
she wasn't asking, she was telling you.
see, she wears her watch Jack Bauer style. you escaped with your life
nice pic. i love the perspective.
What's interesting about this portrait is the angle in which you decided to shoot it. Rather than portray them as equals, you shot them from above, to give the reader a slight insight into your feelinsg towards them. You would rather look down upon her request for booze money rather than see eye to eye.
It worked, seriously well done.
this some henri cartier bresson ish. i love it. you killed it juxtapose. every single person in the pic could've made a great pic on their own. people in the rural areas and townships dont necessarily beg, in my view, as in urban areas. communities are so intimate that its more like, "help a brother/sister out for some goodtime." the slight smile on her face further makes me believe that. it woudnt be the end of her if you didnt give her the money i suppose. this is a winner.
ta, one and all
I don't know Bafana, them kids look well-rehearsed to me. This image has so much in it. Congratulations Juxtapose. All I see is the lack of dignity in the subjects. There's no dignity in begging. But there's something in people getting accustomed to it. Something sad.
